Cataloging Training

There are three areas involved in computerized library catalog records: Descriptive Cataloging, Subject Headings and Classification, and System Functions (circulation, etc.). This training program covers the first two. System Functions depend on the system being used (Follett Destiny, for example). The following instructions apply to cataloging no matter what system is used.

Week 1: Introduction to Cataloging - Online Tutorial

Week 2: Descriptive Cataloging part 1

Week 3: Descriptive Cataloging part 2

Week 4: Subject Headings - Online Tutorial

Week 5: MARC Record - Online Tutorial

Week 6: Dewey Decimal Classification - Online Tutorial

Week 7: Cataloging Chinese Books

  • All previously covered cataloging requirements apply. Records should have author, title, publication information, physical description information, series titles (when appropriate), and subject headings.
  • The title in the 245 field should be in Chinese characters (matching what appears on the book). A 242 field should be added with the English translation of the title. A 246 field should be added with the Pinyin version of the title.
  • The author field (100) should be in Pinyin (or English, if appropriate) not Chinese characters.
  • The publication information should be in Pinyin (or English, if appropriate) not Chinese characters.
  • All other fields of the record should be in English - subject headings, notes, summary, series, etc.
  • If the book is in both Chinese and English, add a 546 field "Bilingual Chinese and English." This will aid in locating bilingual books by keyword searching.
